It’s Giving Low Key: How to Not Look Stressed

Joy Arcalano

Performance anxiety hitting hard but you need to look chill? Throat tight before callbacks? Voice scratchy by Sunday matinee? Learn semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTs) that Broadway performers actually use to stay calm under pressure.
This hands-on workshop teaches six/seven evidence-based breathing and sounding techniques that regulate your nervous system, build vocal stamina, and unlock your full voice when stakes are high. You’ll discover the secret science behind why these exercises actually build up your voice, improve your breathing coordination and stamina, and help you chill out emotionally. Whether you’re dealing with audition nerves, eight-show weeks, or just want to sound fire without straining, these practices work with your actual schedule—backstage, in the car, between classes.
Expect active participation, probably some silly sounds, and zero judgment. No prior voice training needed—just bring your willingness to experiment. You’ll leave with a personalized toolkit proven to help young performers manage stress while building real strength in your breathing apparatus. Tools you can use the second you walk out the door.
Part of the Instrument of Self discovery training from Joy Lamberton Arcolano, Voice Catalyst.

Designing the Artistic Vision Through a #BodyPositive & #ExclusivelyInclusive Lens

Jake Egan

Theatre is a visual language — and costume design is one of its most powerful storytelling dialects. The rising generation of theatre-makers is redefining who gets to be seen, how stories get told, and which bodies are allowed to participate fully in the artistic process. Many young performers carry complicated relationships with visibility, identity, image, and casting norms, experiencing inherited industry assumptions about proportion, silhouette, “correctness,” and spectacle that were never designed for an inclusive world.

In this interactive and multi-modal workshop, participants will explore how costume designers craft meaning, history, identity, humor, and power through silhouette, line, color, texture, and movement — while also considering the lived bodies and identities of the actors who bring these designs to life. Together, we’ll interrogate the defaults of “traditional” casting and costuming culture, celebrate the design breakthroughs of inclusive storytelling, and practice tools for building more compassionate, authentic, and radically imaginative theatrical worlds. Expect sketching, short design challenges, collaborative dramaturgy, guided analysis of iconic production stills, and reflective conversation at the intersection of aesthetics, representation, and design ethics.
